As you may notice, we’ve included a series of links called other places we love. The sites provide us with creative inspiration, are thought starters, and may offer a view from there. This week we’ve included something a little different and provided a link to Jazz FM91. It’s a great radio station here in Toronto and their online radio is a fantastic escape during a long day at work. It’s also one that won’t jar your co-workers.
As someone who was brought up not only listening to Ella, Cole Porter and yes, Nana Mouskouri but also studying music for years, I have a special affinity for this radio station. It’s amazing what a great song can do to relax you and in some cases put a spring in your step.
One of the other reasons we included them is for their involvement in community outreach initiatives. This past year over 500 children attended their educational concert series at their Long & McQuade Performance Hall through the Jazz 4 Kids programme. The JazzFM91 Youth Big Band has performed all over the province of Ontario and they’re appearing at the Markham Jazz Festival on August 20th. Jazz FM also showcases student work from the music program at Humber College.
All you have to do is search “music education and self esteem” on your favourite search engine and see what pops up!
